Every June 24, Inti Raymi is held, a cultural festival that has its origins in the same Inca era. The show takes place in three historical settings for the people of Cusco and for their ancestors the Incas: the Coricancha temple (the most important religious site during the Inca era), the Main Square (which during the Inca era was called Huacaypata and housed the main religious and civic ceremonies) and the fortress of Sacsayhuamán (amazing Inca enclosure made with giant walls that house stones weighing up to 120 tons). Know the difference of each of these shows.
Inti Raymi, in its three stages | |
---|---|
The Coricancha, temple of the sun | Coricancha is the temple of the sun, the most important religious site in the entire Inca Empire (Tahuantinsuyo). Its name means ‘golden temple’ because with this precious metal the Incas worshiped the sun (the god Inti), their main divinity. This temple has the most perfect and best-crafted walls in the vast empire. The places where the sun, the moon, the stars, the rainbow, etc. were worshiped are famous. The sacred esplanade of Coricancha is the scene of the first Inti Raymi show every June 24. The Incas also used this sacred precinct as the setting for the monumental religious festival. |
The Main Square, the Huacaypata | The Main Square of Cusco, during the Inca era, was up to ten times larger and was called Huacaypata which, in the Quechua language, means ‘place of lamentations’. The main civic, military and religious ceremonies took place there in Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire. Around it were the main Inca temples and palaces. However, during the arrival of the Spanish (in the 16th century), these were destroyed, building churches and colonial mansions in their place. The square was reduced following the Spanish structure of the time. The Incas used the Huacaypata to perform the Inti Raymi ceremony every June 24. Today the square is the second stage for the Cusco show Inti Raymi. |
Sacsayhuamán, the Inca fortress | Sacsayhuamán is one of the most impressive archaeological sites made by the Incas. It was a religious site that also served as a fortress in the battles between the Spanish and the Incas for control of Cusco. It is located in the upper part just 1 kilometer from the city of Cusco. It is famous for presenting immense stone walls carved and fitted to perfection. Some rocks reach 120 tons, which is impressive for visitors. In the 16th century, a part of Sacsayhuamán was destroyed by the Spanish for the construction of colonial temples such as the current Cathedral of Cusco. Today Sacsayhuamán is the main stage of Inti Raymi every June 24. Admission to this show is with the purchase of a ticket online. |
